Presenter: Gene Thielman
Gene Thielman is a former music coordinator for the United States Figure Skating Association. He worked on the 2002 Olympics, the Goodwill Games, and many World Championships, assisting skaters with their music.
While traveling to various competitions in the Northeast, he was able to find old skates. He collected more in Brimfield, MA at an outdoor antique swap meet and then found more on Ebay. He became fascinated by the mechanics of ice skates. He has skates that are about 1000 years old where the blade is made from bone. Gene will show us that skates were used to get from one place to another before they were used for what we know of as skating.
Gene has about 1500 ice skates in his collection categorized by year and country. Please come and see his interesting display of ice skates, and hear how they were used.
